Flyover Park Wins ARPA Award for Excellence
Heavy is proud to have been involved in the award-winning Flyover Park project. For this project, the Heavy team was responsible for planning and building the colourful tree sculptures that are hard to miss when cruising Memorial Drive in Calgary, near the Bridgeland-Riverside community.
The RGB custom designed lights create a delightful spectrum of colours across the sky.
This whimsical sculpture, brought to life by Heavy’s PLAN—BUILD™ process, is part of an award-winning revitalization of one of Calgary’s most central public places.
Heavy was approached by Parks Foundation Calgary to help execute a feasible yet fun feature that would inspire and enchant visitors both young and old. The initial concept, developed by the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association and Stantec, involved several lit globes hanging from a framework that would be anchored to the underside of the overpass.
Heavy proposed a rethinking of the initial concept once it became clear that anchoring to the underside of the existing infrastructure would not be feasible. The concept Heavy proposed involved two stand-alone, abstracted tree forms, each supporting multiple internally lit globes. Both trees are identical but positioned at unique angles to give the illusion that they are each unique in themselves.
The result is a dazzling lightshow at night and a head-turning, whimsical sculpture during the day that has already defined the area and become a fan favourite for visitors and residents alike.
“Flyover Park seeks to enhance an underused urban space as a thriving community hub under the 4th Avenue Flyover.”
The success of this project highlights the importance of showing pride in our shared public spaces. Heavy believes that well designed spaces help bring us together and foster a greater sense of community. When done right, placemaking improves the lives of residents and visitors, which is on full display with the award-winning Flyover Park
