COLUMBUS & ALDIS ROUNDABOUT
Two roundabout features, designed by Hitchcock Design Group and brought to life through PLAN—BUILD™ by Heavy, welcome visitors to the City of East Chicago with a maritime greeting.
Our Approach
After successfully teaming up with Hitchcock Design Group on a previous PLAN—BUILD™ feature for the City of East Chicago, Indiana, Heavy was brought back on board to execute another set of placemaking experiences just down the road from the original features.
The Opportunity
Landscape architect, Hitchcock Design Group envisioned a continuation of the theme seen in the Beach Ball and Umbrella features that define the shoreline less than a mile away. Heavy was responsible for ensuring the architects vision was brought to life, on schedule and on budget.
The Heavy team began by coordinating and finalizing detailed design by seeking engineer, client and architect approval on our initial shop drawings. This critical step allows our project management team to procure all necessary material, hardware, site rentals, and travel logistics with confidence. Additionally, Heavy was responsible for coordinating the install of these features with existing site infrastructure, including working with the City of East Chicago law enforcement to temporarily close down the roads in order to safely offload the monolithic steel sails onto their plinths.
