LAURA
A timeless representation of youth and serenity, this sculpture by Jaume Plensa was meticulously planned, built and installed by Heavy with the ultimate goal of maintaining the artist’s vision.
Our Approach
To execute Jaume Plensa’s incredible concept in a way that would exceed expectations of everyone involved.
The Opportunity
Heavy had previously worked with Jaume Plensa on Calgary’s largest ever public art sculpture, named “Wonderland”, centrally located within the city’s downtown. The success of this project led the artist to approach Heavy to help build another iconic piece.
This incredible work, named “Laura” would be roughly 75% of the size of Wonderland, with the same density and frequency of bent rod. Another major difference would be that Laura’s material and finish specification are passivated (raw) stainless steel instead of coated mild steel.
Heavy was able to leverage our in-house 3D modeling expertise to ensure the artist’s intent was fully maintained and defined through the precise design of CNC-milled bending jigs. These jigs would ensure each rod was oriented in the exact position defined by the initial model sent by the artist.
The result is a head-turning feature that will welcome visitors to the Fairmont Century Plaza for decades to come.
