ROCKWOOD SUNRISE
Rockwood Sunrise is a set of 50 cambered steel spires crowned with 6’ translucent FRP cones with an electronically controlled light display.
Our Approach
Lighting is an important element in much of Corson’s body of work. Heavy was brought on board to leverage its planning and design strategies to complete a three-month installation within a week.
The Opportunity
The fans of 12” OD spires are mounted to pergolas and installed between live wires on a train platform. An electronically controlled light display illuminates the tips of the translucent fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) cones that produces a dynamic colour sequence for several minutes before shifting back to aqua-coloured tips.
The structure is situated between 6 lanes of traffic, two tracks of light rail transit and no more than 10 feet away from multiple levels of HV power supply for the city and the transit. Thus, this project required a well-choreographed installation with parts needing to be installed with precision on either side of live electrical wires in the 52-minute window between the last train at night and the first train in the morning.
