TELUS SKY SPIRAL STAIRCASE
Designed in close collaboration with Hindle Architects, this feature stair connecting the top two floors of Telus Sky utilizes Heavy’s unique PLAN—BUILD™ process to bring together the right expertise and create what has been described as “the best piece of construction in the city”.
Our Approach
Owned by CBRE Limited, contracted by EllisDon Construction Services Inc. and conceived of by Hindle Architects Ltd., Heavy was hired to design assist, fabricate and install a spiral staircase that spans between executive floors 59 to 60 of the Telus Sky building.
The Opportunity
The spiral stair is made of black autobody finished monolithic 32mm curved steel stringers, a seamless white fiberglass soffit, grain matched Italian Carrera marble treads and complete with an engineered tuned mass damper system. This awe inspiring architectural masterpiece is a sight to behold.
Due to the size and shape of the stair a 1200kg tuned mass damper was added to absorb the movement generated when travelling up or down the stair, without which travelers could feel something akin to car sickness.
The stairs were broken out into manageable modules which were built on Heavy premises using a jig. These modules were hoisted by crane, threaded through the opening at the 60th floor and placed on the original jig.
