Glacier Skywalk Landscape 5.jpg

A cliff-edge walkway with stunning mountain and glacial vistas.

Glacier Skywalk, which opened May of 2014, is an interpretive experience in one of the most unique ecosystems in the world.

The Opportunity

Heavy is proud to be a part of the team that made this award-winning design by Sturgess Architecture and RJC Engineers a reality. Working closely with PCL Construction, Heavy completed the large, faceted elements along the walkway that are made of weathering steel.

The Approach

Heavy worked through an in-depth design phase to dovetail the structural requirements from the engineering team at RJC with the aesthetic that Sturgess Architecture had envisioned.

Through the design process, we determined that a monocoque approach would be most suitable; supporting the loads of the structure through the external skin, which curbed the amount of internal framework and made the features more efficient to build.
