The Boss of the Plains comes to life through art.
An echo of the past made as an homage to Calgary’s iconic symbol - the Stetson.
The Opportunity
“Hat Stack” is a permanent sculpture designed by renowned Canadian Artist Walter May for the Le Germain Hotel in downtown Calgary. Heavy facilitated the planning, building and installation of May’s concept to recall the history of an iconic hat – the Stetson, AKA “Boss of the Plains.”
The Approach
The 19’ tall sculpture consists of 33 identical cast bronze Stetson hats that elegantly project upwards from a cast concrete base installed on footings in the ground.
May desired a finish that would suggest that the hats were made of felt with the tangible look and feel of a Stetson hat. The team worked on an array of finishes and ultimately landed on a method of sandcasting, which enabled the team to realistically represent a felt texture.
