Lighting up silhouettes of the past.

A combination of stainless steel, Ipê wood slats, and diffused led display lighting is used to mark out the perimeter of the original 1875 Fort Calgary.

The Opportunity

Fort Calgary is a designated National Historic District, commonly referred to as the birthplace of the City of Calgary.

In collaboration with Jill Anholt, Heavy was involved early in the conceptual development phase of the project to tell the story of this historic site.

The Approach

Jill Anholt’s Marking commemorates the history of the location while nodding to the symbolism of convergence and change. The achieved art piece is durable and virtually maintenance free.

This project required careful design and fabrication of uniquely shaped wood pickets which gradually transform into the shadowy profiles of figures from the past.

Heavy was involved early in the conceptual development of the project, allowing us to lend our material expertise to the design of the piece. At every step along the way, our team thoroughly considered how each material would behave throughout the project lifecycle to ensure this iconic landmark would stand the test of time.
