Simons Canopy Landscape 2.jpg

An historic building transformed.

The canopy was designed by McKinley Burkhart to draw attention the revitalized Lancaster Building, Calgary’s first ever skyscraper. Heavy helped execute this vision by ushering this project through our PLAN—BUILD™ process.

The Opportunity

The Simons building in downtown Calgary offers shoppers a taste of the old and the new by combining contemporary flair with the heritage of a historic building. The five-storey, 95,000 square foot multi-building layout creates an exciting shopping experience where customers can explore unique environments; each with its own space and personality.

The Approach

Heavy collaborated with EllisDon to bring Mckinley Studios’ vision of a contemporary Simons facade to life. The approach incorporated the conservation and reconstruction of the historic site, balanced with modern interventions that activate the streetscape. Heavy planned, built and installed the canopy feature along a very busy 7th Ave C-Train line.
