Simon Stairs Landscape 5.jpg

Form and function achieved through PLAN—BUILD™.

Two completely unique sets of stairs, meant to inspires visitors to the Simons store in Calgary’s downtown core. Heavy is proud to have helped facilitate these beautiful architectural showpieces through our PLAN—BUILD™ process.

The Opportunity

Heavy was engaged by Govan Brown to aid in the design, development and construction of two sets of feature stairs for Simons’ Calgary location. Collaborating closely with the project team, Heavy worked to determine the best way to achieve Mckinley Studios vision for the stairs by developing a thorough understanding of the desired finishes, design approach, and overall aesthetic required for each space.

The Approach

Blackened steel was used for one set of stairs, and consideration was given to limiting vibration through creative engineering and design details. Due to the compound geometry and desire for a monolithic, seamless finish, fibreglass was selected for the second stair.

To assist with final approvals on materials and finishes, one to one scale mockups were completed for each stair to ensure the final result met the vision and intent prior to moving into fabrication.
