High degree of fit and finish with a modern and sleek outcome.
Designed by BIG - Bjarke Ingles Group in partnership with Dialog, the unprecedented architecture of Telus Sky was a major opportunity for Heavy to exercise our PLAN—BUILD™ process in full. The outcome is truly extraordinary!
Our Approach
Engaged by Icon / Westbank through PLAN-BUILD™, Heavy was tasked with finding a more cost effective solution for the fit-out of the Telus Sky stairs and green wall planter system, that would achieve the initial architectural intent of a monolithic aesthetic.
Heavy’s goal was to ensure BIG and Dialog’s extraordinary vision was achieved successfully. Their vision included a sleek, eye-catching 8-storey living wall accompanied by beautiful yet functional, seamless atrium stair.
The Opportunity
After realizing the original approach would not be cost-effective, Heavy shifted the materials approach. Once Heavy had engaged with multiple material experts and explored different coating systems, our team landed on vacuum-formed Avonite™ for the planters and stair soffit, while using aluminum panel for the flat surfaces. The result is modern and clean with an organic contrast.
Heavy’s planning scope included in-house 3D modeling and construction drawings through SolidWorks, material procurement, fabrication and site install coordination, among many other tasks. See how our PLAN—BUILD™ process has evolved into an effective tool to be leveraged by architects, artists and developers alike.
